I’ve always been drawn to work that involves supporting children and young people. Through my work in schools, I realised that the part of my role I felt most passionate about was supporting speech, language and communication.
My interest in language development also grew from my experiences as a parent. When my daughter was younger, I loved exploring language-rich activities with her and often incorporated Montessori approaches that encourage curiosity, independence and communication. Watching her develop a love of words and stories from such an early age and now seeing her as an avid reader, deepened my appreciation of how powerful language can be in a child’s life.
I’m passionate about creating warm, supportive environments where children and young people feel comfortable communicating in their own way and at their own pace. I love using creativity, play and individual interests to make communication meaningful and engaging. I feel very grateful to work in a role that allows me to support children and young people in finding their voice and building the confidence to express themselves.
My favourite word is “Meraki”: A Greek word meaning to put a piece of your soul into everything that you do, acting with love, warmth, creativity, purpose or intention. I love that language isn’t always so serious! I have a great fondness for words that are just fun to say, e.g dilly-dally, flabbergasted, discombobulated. But reigning supreme above them all is supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, the iconic Mary Poppins word. Proof that the most wonderful things in life sometimes defy description, until someone invents the perfect word!
