Apprenticeships

Here at Magic Words, we are passionate about doing our part to invest in the future of Speech and Language Therapy.

Why apprenticeships matter to us

At Magic Words Therapy, we're passionate about helping people access life-changing speech and language support.

To do that, our profession needs skilled, confident and compassionate clinicians. That's why we actively invest in Speech and Language Therapy apprenticeships.

We make no profit from offering apprenticeship opportunities. We do it because we believe in supporting the future of our profession and helping develop the next generation of Speech and Language Therapists.

Learning while making a difference

Our apprentices gain hands-on experience working alongside experienced clinicians while studying towards their qualification. This allows them to:

  • Apply learning in real-world situations

  • Build confidence and professional skills

  • Develop clinical knowledge with ongoing support

  • Make a meaningful difference to the individuals and families we support

University partnerships

We currently work with Birmingham City University, Keele University and the University of Essex, which offer Speech and Language Therapy degree apprenticeship pathways.

Depending on the university and course, learning may take place online or in person, alongside your clinical practice at Magic Words. We hope to continue exploring opportunities with other universities to support more people into the profession in the future

Supporting the next generation

We are proud to currently support four apprentices within our organisation, one who has recently completed their apprenticeship and qualified as a Speech & Language Therapist. Each apprentice brings their unique strengths, experiences and perspectives to our team, helping us continue to grow and innovate while delivering high-quality care.

Why choose an apprenticeship?

For many people, apprenticeships offer an alternative route into the profession. Benefits can include:

✔ Earning while learning
✔ Developing practical clinical experience from day one
✔ Learning alongside experienced professionals
✔ Building confidence in a supportive environment
✔ Working towards a recognised qualification

Meet Our Apprentices

“I chose the apprenticeship route to gain a qualification while getting real-life experience in the workplace. Learning on the job has helped me understand my learning better, build my confidence and develop my skills across different settings. Balancing work and study can be challenging, but it has strengthened my time-management and organisational skills. The team at Magic Words are approachable and supportive, and my advice is not to put too much pressure on yourself to know everything straight away.

You don’t have to be perfect from the start — the whole point is to learn, develop and gain experience along the way.”

“As a busy parent returning to learning later in life, the apprenticeship route offered the perfect balance of hands-on experience and academic development, whilst still being able to earn. Working across different settings has broadened my understanding and built my confidence in supporting a wide range of clients. Balancing study, clinical practice and family life can be challenging, but it’s incredibly rewarding.

With excellent support from my mentor and clinical supervisor, I’ve learned that it’s okay not to know everything straight away — give yourself time to learn and take the leap!”

“The apprenticeship route has allowed me to retrain in a way that is practical and achievable alongside family commitments, while continuing to progress professionally. Applying theory directly to clinical practice has been the most rewarding part of my journey so far. The support from the team at Magic Words has been invaluable in developing my confidence.

My advice to anyone considering an apprenticeship is to stay organised, ask questions and trust in your ability to succeed — confidence builds with time and experience.”

From Apprentice to SaLT - Laura’s Story:

“I chose the Speech and Language Therapy Degree Apprenticeship because I learn best by “doing,” and it allowed me to apply my learning directly in the workplace. Balancing university, self-study, full-time work and personal life wasn’t easy, but the support from Magic Words was incredible. My colleagues encouraged me to take on new challenges and supported me when things felt overwhelming.

Reflecting on how far I’ve come over the past four years has been incredibly rewarding, and I know there will always be more to discover in Speech and Language Therapy. I’m now excited to begin my next chapter as a qualified Speech and Language Therapist with Magic Words, putting all that hard work into practice.”

Creating opportunities for the future

The demand for Speech and Language Therapy continues to grow, while the profession faces ongoing workforce shortages. By investing in apprenticeships, we hope to play a small part in building a stronger future for the profession, bringing more people into the field and improving access to support for individuals and families who need it most.

We’re always keen to hear from people who share our values and are passionate about making a difference. While we’re currently at capacity for apprenticeships, we welcome enquiries from anyone interested in exploring this route. Our leadership team would be happy to arrange a time to chat and tell you more.
