Understanding Dementia in Adults
Dementia is an umbrella term describing a range of progressive neurological conditions that affect memory, thinking, reasoning, and communication.
There are over 200 types of dementia, with some of the most common including:
Alzheimer’s disease
Vascular dementia
Frontotemporal dementia (FTD)
Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB)
It is estimated that more than 1 million people in the UK are currently living with dementia.
The effects of dementia vary depending on which areas of the brain are affected. Different areas of the brain control different functions, meaning signs and symptoms can vary significantly between individuals.
