Adults with Learning Disabilities

Expert speech and language therapy designed to support each individual’s communication strengths, needs, and goals.

Understanding Learning Disabilities

There are approximately 1.2 million adults in the UK with a learning disability.

A learning disability affects general intellectual functioning and the ability to learn new skills throughout life.

People with learning disabilities are more likely to experience additional diagnoses, including Autism, Down’s syndrome, epilepsy, or cerebral palsy.

Some individuals may also have Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD), where communication, movement, vision, hearing, or physical health may also be affected.

Learning Disabilities and Communication

People with learning disabilities may experience challenges with:

  • Understanding spoken language

  • Following conversations

  • Expressing thoughts and ideas

  • Using spoken or written communication

  • Understanding abstract concepts or consequences

  • Making informed decisions independently

Speech and language therapy can support communication, understanding, independence, and participation in daily life.
