Understanding Autism in Adults
There are approximately 700,000 Autistic people in the UK — more than 1 in 100 people.
Autism is a spectrum condition, which means Autistic people can have varying support needs. Autism is also often considered a ‘hidden’ disability, as you cannot always tell someone is Autistic by looking at them.
We believe Autism should be viewed as a difference, not a deficit. Autistic adults do not need therapy simply for being Autistic. However, some people may benefit from support with specific challenges that impact communication, relationships, or daily life.
Autistic adults may experience:
Difficulties understanding what others are thinking or feeling
Anxiety in social situations
Differences in social communication styles
Literal interpretation of language
Sensory sensitivities
Challenges with changes to routine
Differences in eye contact, personal space, or conversation styles
Strong interests or attention to detail
Difficulties expressing emotions or needs
Challenges understanding neurotypical social expectations
Many Autistic adults, particularly women, may mask Autistic characteristics, which can delay diagnosis.
Autism and Communication
Speech and language therapy can support Autistic adults to better understand themselves and their communication preferences.
Therapy may include:
Exploring communication and interaction styles
Developing strategies for navigating social situations
Supporting friendship building and meaningful relationships
Supporting emotional expression and self-advocacy
Exploring non-literal language and social expectations
Developing mutual understanding between neurodivergent and neurotypical communication styles
Supporting communication confidence in work and social settings
Practising overwhelming or anxiety-provoking situations in a safe environment
Supporting routines and organisation in ways that are meaningful and motivating
Supporting individuals to advocate for preferences relating to eye contact, personal space, and communication style
Speech and language therapy can also support non-speaking or minimally-speaking Autistic adults through alternative communication approaches such as text-to-speech apps or Voice Output Communication Aids (VOCAs).
How Speech and Language Therapy Can Help
We assess each person holistically and tailor support around what matters most to them. It is important that therapy is neurodiversity-affirming. We do not support approaches that aim to reduce or suppress Autistic characteristics. Instead, we focus on supporting communication, self-understanding, autonomy, and quality of life.
